CIPD Student Stories: Jess Pogson | CIPD Level 5 Diploma

Jess is thriving while learning online and has even joined a WhatsApp group of fellow learners to keep her on track and motivated throughout her studies.

Originally from Huddersfield, I'm currently working in Manchester for Dukinfield Metal Spinning, a company who undertake railway refurbishment works and produce metal components for the hot water industry.

My job is very varied but I am mainly responsible for payroll and, due to no one else having overall responsibility, I have taken on all personnel duties.

Since taking on these duties, I realised how important the role is not only for the company but also the employees. I realised quickly that it would be beneficial to start working towards a Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management and so I did some research into different providers and was immediately attracted to ICS Learn.

Coincidentally, I also saw that an ex-colleague was studying with them and her recommendation encourage me to go ahead with my studies.

I definitely had reservations about online study, and I was very worried about being able to complete the course at my own pace in case I lost motivation.

However, I have so far not experienced much of this (maybe just a little when the sun is shining) but I have joined a WhatsApp group with some peers who started studying at the same time and this has been such a great motivation.

The course so far has been so interesting and I am already applying my new knowledge to everyday situations at work.

Where once I would have had to rely on internet searches for advice, I now have much more trust in my own knowledge and decisions.

I've also been complimented on my confidence in the way I speak about topics, which I can only put down to being on this course.

I am looking forward to a future with the same company, after racking up five years of service in August this year, and I hope that I am able to progress into a Management role upon completion of my course.

This has definitely been a more favourable option for me over going to college or university.
